"A long time ago I carefully read Robert Craft’s Conversations with Igor Stravinsky. I might not remember it perfectly ... but somewhere in that book, S. describes a long and difficult struggle he had with a particular tone row, try as he might, he just could not get the intervals to work. But finally (can’t remember the time but it was particularly long for him), after an exhausting day he falls asleep at the piano and has a dream where a series of intervals appear in the form of bright pink, elongated bubbles, filled with light and life, and they hung beautifully in the air before him, undulating, vibrating, pulsing ~ and he knew he finally had the perfect tone row.
